Hedge Pruning and Shaping: Calendar for Thujas, Yews, and Boxwoods
When and how to prune hedges for a dense, impenetrable green screen. A practical guide to timing cuts in the Małopolska region.

A dense hedge serves as a natural windbreak, dust buffer, and privacy barrier. For shrubs to grow dense right down to ground level, regular pruning of both leader shoots and lateral branches is required.
Pruning calendar: spring and late summer
Perform the primary shaping cut in late March before active bud break. A secondary touch-up cut follows around late June. Final light trimming must finish by late August so new growth hardens before winter frosts.
Trapezoidal profile for lower branch light
A common misstep is cutting hedges strictly vertical. A properly sculpted hedge is slightly broader at the base than at the crest (a subtle trapezoid), allowing sunlight to nourish bottom foliage.
